Hello South Portland!
I’m Wheeler Boyd-Boffa, and I’m running for the South Portland School Board. I’m committed to rigorous, transparent decision-making that delivers an excellent and equitable education for every student while responsibly managing our taxpayer dollars.
As a parent of two South Portland elementary school students, I’m deeply invested in our students across the district having the benefits of a thriving public school system. Like many in this community I was inspired to engage in our school board’s work early this year as a challenging FY27 budget process resulted in staff reductions, the closure of Kaler Elementary, and plans to reconfigure our remaining elementary schools.
While it remains to be seen how these decisions serve our schools, it’s clear they stemmed from longstanding issues that warranted earlier action. Instead the community was caught off-guard, leaving many saddened and angered. That said, seeing our community mobilize and form new connections was inspiring and I’m optimistic that the shared experience will prove a healthy shock to the system.
I’m running to help chart a steadier course: rigorous decision-making and multi-year planning, prudent management of our property tax dollars, and high expectations coupled with strong support for every learner and staff-member. I’m excited to work with fellow board members, school staff, and community stakeholders to get there.
I’ve spent my career helping organizations use data to inform decision making. This Spring I put that background to work in analyzing the district’s budget and enrollment forecasting data, while also engaging the Board and Administration both directly and at meetings during public comment. Now I hope to bring that skillset directly to the Board to improve decision making, increase transparency and communication, and ensure our student-facing staff have a strong voice in the decisions that affect them and our students.
I love South Portland, I believe it has even greater potential, and that a strong public school system is a critical pillar of a thriving community.

Great schools depend on trusted, skilled teachers and support personnel. Foster a culture where school-facing staff feel heard, valued, and professionally supported so they build their careers in our district.
Consistent Learning Environments
Children, especially our youngest learners, grow best in predictable environments anchored by familiar faces, stable routines, and minimal disruption. Prioritize continuity so students feel secure and ready to learn.

Fiscally Responsible Stewardship
Education is South Portland’s single largest shared investment. I will advocate for rigorous fiscal oversight and plain-language financial reporting that ensures tax dollars are managed prudently to protect taxpayer dollars while delivering the essential resources needed for high-quality public education.
Intentional Technology Usage
Promote cost-conscious technology adoption, clear guidelines for responsible artificial intelligence use, and digital tools that thoughtfully complement curriculum and are not just the default medium for learning.
Accountable Decision Making
Back every impactful board vote with clear context and rationale. Foster genuine engagement with staff, families, and residents. Close the loop by showing how community input informs decisions and when district constraints require a different approach.
